“I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected.” — Habakkuk 2:1
There is a profound difference between waiting and loitering. In the modern world, waiting is seen as a waste of time—a gap between two events. But in the Kingdom, waiting is a tactical position. It is an active military stance.
The prophet Habakkuk paints a picture of the believer not as a victim cowering in the dark, but as a watchman standing on the rampart of a fortress. The rampart is the high ground. It is the place of visibility. It is where you go when you need to see above the fog of the immediate battle.
Too many of us are fighting in the mud, blinded by the chaos of our daily circumstances—the financial pressure, the relational conflict, the noise of the culture. When you are on the ground floor, everything looks like a giant. Every threat looks overwhelming because your perspective is limited by your elevation. You react to everything because you can see nothing.
But the Warrior climbs the rampart. He separates himself from the noise to hear the voice of the Commander. Habakkuk says, “I will watch to see what He will say to me.” This implies expectation. A watchman doesn’t stare into the dark hoping something might happen; he stares into the dark knowing the dawn is coming. He knows the signal is inevitable.
In this season, you may feel like God is silent. You’ve prayed, you’ve fasted, and the heavens seem like brass. But silence is not absence. In warfare, silence is often the breath before the command. It is the moment the General pauses before signaling the charge.
If you aren’t hearing Him, check your elevation. Are you down in the chaos, complaining about the dark? Or are you up on the rampart, watching for the signal? Are you looking at the problem, or are you looking for the answer?
Stand your watch today. Do not abandon your post because you are tired. Do not lower your guard because the night is long. The vision is for an appointed time. It will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it. The answer is coming, but it will only be received by those who are awake to hear it.
The Warrior’s Prayer:Lord, I ascend the rampart today. I pull my mind out of the mud of circumstance and set my eyes on the horizon of Your promise. I refuse to interpret Your silence as abandonment. I choose to interpret it as preparation. Keep me awake. Keep me alert. Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening. Amen.
