The Silence Before the Strike

December 12, 2025

“The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” — Exodus 14:14

This command was given to the children of Israel at the Red Sea, and to understand the weight of it, you have to understand the terror of the moment.

The situation was a tactical nightmare. To their front lay the Red Sea—a cold, impassable barrier of deep water. To their left and right were jagged cliffs and harsh terrain. And behind them? Behind them was the sound of death. The Egyptian army—the undisputed superpower of the ancient world—was thundering toward them. Six hundred choice chariots, the elite guard of Pharaoh, and the entire cavalry of Egypt.

You can imagine the sensory overload. The ground shaking from the hooves of horses. The dust cloud rising in the distance like a choking fog. The glint of sunlight on bronze spears. The screaming of women and children.

Panic didn’t just set in; it took over. The people began to scream at Moses. They reverted instantly to a slave mindset. They yelled, “It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.” Fear always makes you want to go back to bondage because bondage is predictable, and freedom is terrifying.

In the middle of this chaos, with the noise of the army rising and the cries of the people deafening, Moses gives them the hardest command a warrior can receive. He doesn’t say “Draw your swords.” He doesn’t say “Run.”

He says, “Hold your peace.”

In the Hebrew, this phrase is aggressive. It implies becoming deaf and dumb. Silent. Still. It is the discipline of refusing to let your fear speak. It is the command to stop partnering with the chaos.

Why? Because panic is the enemy’s form of worship. When you panic, you are declaring that the enemy’s power is greater than God’s promise. When you vocalize your fear, you are amplifying the enemy’s propaganda to everyone standing next to you. You become a megaphone for terror.

But when you hold your peace, you create a vacuum. You create a holy silence that God fills with His power.

This is not passivity; this is strategic positioning. Think of an archer holding his breath before releasing the arrow to ensure his aim is true. Think of a line of riot police standing completely still while the mob screams in their faces. It is strength under control.

You may be facing a Red Sea moment right now. The debt is closing in like a chariot. The relationship is crumbling. The medical report is bad. The lawsuit is looming. Your flesh wants to scream. You want to run. You want to fix it with human hands, frantic phone calls, and desperate maneuvering.

Stop.

Stand still. Hold your peace. The silence you keep is the platform for the miracle God is about to perform. God cannot fight for you while you are trying to fight for yourself in a panic. He needs you to step back so He can step forward. The Lord is stepping onto the battlefield as a Man of War. Get out of His way and watch Him work.

The Warrior’s Prayer: God of the Armies, I silence my soul before You. I command my emotions to bow to Your Lordship. I refuse to partner with panic. I refuse to speak the language of defeat. I stand still and watch for Your salvation. You are the Fighter; I am the witness. Split the sea and drown the enemy that pursues me. I trust in Your mighty arm. Amen.
