Called Out of the Shadows

October 22, 2025

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” — 1 Peter 2:9

Some men spend their lives in the shadows. They keep their heads down, never stepping into the light of their true calling. They hide behind their work, their hobbies, their addictions. They let fear, shame, or insecurity convince them it’s safer to stay unseen. The shadows feel safe. In the shadows, no one can criticize you. No one can expect more of you. No one can wound you again.

But the truth is this: the shadows may feel safe, but they keep you small. And God has not called you to smallness. He has called you to light.

Think of Gideon. When the angel of the Lord appeared to him, he was threshing wheat in a winepress — hiding from his enemies. By every earthly measure, Gideon was a coward. Yet Heaven did not call him what he felt. Heaven named him what he was created to be: “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12) God called him out of the shadows into his true identity.

Think of Peter. He denied Jesus three times in the dark. Fear drove him into hiding. But the risen Christ restored him by a fire on the beach, and that same Peter stood in the light on the day of Pentecost, proclaiming the gospel with boldness. The man who hid in the shadows became the man who declared the light.

This is the pattern of God. He doesn’t leave His sons in hiding. He calls them out — not because they are flawless, but because they are chosen. 1 Peter 2:9 doesn’t describe perfect men; it describes redeemed men. Chosen. Royal. Holy. His possession. Men who were once in darkness but are now carriers of light.

Brother, what shadows have you been hiding in? Maybe it’s the shadow of shame, the voice telling you your past disqualifies you. Maybe it’s the shadow of fear, whispering that you’ll fail again. Maybe it’s the shadow of comfort, where you’ve settled for less than what God has called you to. Whatever it is, God’s voice is breaking through today: “Come out.”

The light will expose you, yes. It will call you to more than you think you can carry. But it will also set you free. Because in the light, you don’t have to hide anymore. In the light, you discover your strength. In the light, you find your purpose.

You were never made for the shadows. You were made for the battlefield. You were made to stand in the light of your King and declare His praises. Step out. The world needs your courage more than your silence.
